Icons Denzel Washington and Spike Lee Reuniting on ‘High and Low’

In an exciting development for fans of cinema, cultural icons Denzel Washington and Spike Lee are set to reunite for the adaptation of the 1963 Japanese crime thriller “High and Low,” originally directed by the legendary Akira Kurosawa. Variety has confirmed that this project, which marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, will be developed with Apple and A24. Their last joint venture was the 2006 critically acclaimed bank robbery film “Inside Man.”

“High and Low” will serve as a modern reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s classic, which starred Toshiro Mifune. The story, rooted in the novel “King’s Ransom” by Ed McBain, revolves around a businessman whose life spirals out of control after kidnappers demand a hefty ransom. This adaptation promises to maintain the nostalgic essence of the original while introducing contemporary nuances to its storytelling.

The screenplay, penned by Lee and Alan Fox, is being developed and produced by A24 alongside Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures. Following its theatrical release through A24, “High and Low” will be available for streaming on Apple TV+.

The production team boasts significant names, including Todd Black of Escape Artists and Michael Berman of Mandalay Pictures. Spike Lee will also serve as an executive producer through his company, 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks, with Mandalay Pictures’ Peter Gruber. Additional executive producers include Matthew Lindner, Chris Brigham, and Katia Washington for Juniper Productions, with Jordan Moldo of Mandalay Pictures on board as co-producer.

In another thrilling update, Denzel Washington is set to star in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming epic centered around the Carthaginian General Hannibal. Although the production start date for “High and Low” remains unconfirmed, the anticipation is already mounting. This project holds particular significance for those interested in exploring untold stories of historical Black figures on a global scale, positioning Hannibal as a figure of immense interest.
